Apple Hill Orchard Trip

Calling all Valdese Terrific Tots and Preschool Pals! Join us for a trip to the Apple Hill Orchard. Our storytime will meet at the orchard for a fun and informative tour through the orchard. We will sample cider, apple bread, and get to take home some fresh, delicious apples. Parents must pre-register and pay $6.00 PER PERSON to Ms. Amber or Ms. Linda by SEPTEMBER 17TH. Directions and more information will be given at storytimes prior to the trip.

The Morganton Public Library, together with The Burke County Health Department presents a free Infant/Toddler Safety and Nutrition Workshop for parents of infants and toddlers and parents-to-be! Rebekah Poplin-WIC Nutritionist, Michelle Rich-Safe Kids Burke County Coordinator, and Anna Watkins-Child Care Health Consultant will be here to present topics such as nutrition, car seat safety, and information on SIDS. Also, enter to win a Doorprize!

Baby Bookworms

A first time library experience for your one year old child! Join us on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 for a short storytime filled with action rhymes, songs and fingerplays. Also, enjoy our board books, parent materials and music selections. Storytimes are shortened to fit the attention span of a toddler followed by hands on experiences. Storytimes last approximately 10-15 minutes followed by an easy (and sometimes messy) art activity OR unlimited playtime with friends! Terrific Tots

Storytime for two and three year olds includes crafts, songs, books, and exciting get up and move activities. Storytimes are held on Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m. This group meets in six week sessions and pre-registration is required.

August 31st: Art Day

Get ready to be creative and get messy! We will be doing several painting activities today including finger paintings and dauber art! Dress accordingly, paint smocks will be provided!

September 7th: Elephants

Today we will read Elmer’s Colors by David McKee as well as some other Elephant stories. We will also make colorful elephants and paper bag elephant puppets. Hope to see you there!

September 14th: Monkeys

Swing by the library for a storytime you will go bananas for! We will read Naughty Little Monkeys and a few other monkey stories. We will also make a monkey craft and have a yummy banana snack!

September 21st: Tigers

It’s the year of the tiger and we are celebrating with stories and crafts. We will be reading The Cinder-Eyed Cats by Eric Rohmann as well as a few other tiger stories. We will also make 2010 Year of The Tiger picture frame.

Preschool Pals

Created for children ages 4 and 5, Preschool Pals is geared for children in Preschool or Pre-K programs. Join us for a fun filled hour of stories, games, songs, crafts, and other educational activities with a creative focus on skills needed for Kindergarten.

Thursdays @11:00 a.m.
Pre-registration is required. Register @ the Youth Services Desk.

September 2nd

Start out the month of storytime with the book The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash and discover the disaster that occurred down on the farm. This month we will be exploring the farm and the difference between it and the city. All our crafts will be geared toward this theme as well!

September 9th

Today we will have a craft day. We will make a nesting chicken, curled paper sheep, and a cow puppet.

September 16th

Explore the differences in the country and the city. We will read The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse. For a craft we will make a picture of the city skyline at night and make mouse print paintings. To help us learn the difference we will also do some sorting activities with city and country pictures.

September 23rd

For our craft day we will be making a footprint horse and some muddy pigs. Come prepared to get dirty as we paint today!

September 30th

To finish up the farm theme this month, we will share some books about more farm animals. We will read The Wolf’s Chicken Stew and Farmer Duck. We will finish up with a craft that allows the kids to retell the story of The Wolf’s Chicken Stew. We will make a wolf and chicken puppet complete with pocket pieces for a great recreation.

4th and 5th Grade Book Discussion Group

This group meets once a month to discuss a pre-chosen book! Meetings will take place on the fourth Wednesday of every month (excluding December) at 3:30pm and will last 45 minutes to an hour. Book discussions will include a snack. Discussions will be led by a library staff member that will guide the discussions and ensure that everyone is able to participate as they choose and topics are relevant.

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 - All American Craft Day

Use cd’s, marbles, plastic bottles caps, and design templates to make CD spinners! (Please bring any plastic bottle caps that you may have for this craft!) Also, we will be using homemade sand clay to create sculptures, or your own sand castle to take home. Last, but not least bring your own tshirt and using your hands, make a Bald Eagle T-shirt!

Thursday, September 9th, 2010 - Tuttle State Park Trip

On this date, Cool Kids Club and the Library Explorers group will be meeting at Tuttle State Park to take an adventure down the Talking Tree Trail! Learn all about the different kinds of native trees to our area and enjoy the outdoors on this afternoon! If you need directions to the park, please pick up a copy at the Youth Services Desk. Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 - Creature Feature

On this date the Catawba Science Center will be here at the library to present the Creature Feature program. Children will become zoologists as they explore and discover different animal groups such as insects, sea life, mammals and more. Meet some of the Catawba Science Center’s resident live animals! Don’t miss out on this one!

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010 - Amelia Bedelia

If you like Amelia Bedelia, then this storytime is just for you! Listen and laugh to a few Amelia Bedila stories, and make some silly crafts just like Amelia would such as planting lightbulbs in a clay pot, and ice a fake sponge cake! Munch on a snack of yummy chocolate cupcakes!

Library Explorers

Library Explorers is designed for children in grades 3-5. If you enjoy activities that involve nature, art, science, computers, animals, movies, games and much more, than this program is for you. Depending upon the program, this group may meet on or offsite and run an hour to an hour and a half. Registration is required for this program.

Test your knowledge about the Solar System! Participate in the Planet Card Game, label a Solar System Diagram, and see how many questions you can answer correctly about the solar system. Make several different solar system related crafts such as: Glitter Galaxies, Plastic Light Catchers, Clay Planets, Planet Postcards, and Planet Posters.

September 9th, 2010 - 4:00 to 5:00 pm

We will meet at Tuttle State Educational Forest on this date. We will be taking an adventure down the Talking Tree Trail. During this meeting, Catawba Science Center will be here to present the program Body Connections. In this program you will be investigating body systems, including a look at the skeleton and joints. Learn the importance of good nutrition and exercise, and discover the microbes that can make you sick. Don’t miss out on this one!

September 23rd, 2010 - 4:00 to 5:00 pm

We will meet at MMA College of Martial Arts on this date. The school is located in the downstairs of the Body Tech Fitness Center in downtown Morganton. Instructor Tommy Little will be teaching you about the importance of Martial Arts, and the benefits of taking martial arts classes. We may also go over a few basic techniques and an easy workout. Please wear comfortable clothes to this meeting, and if you need directions to the school, ask Ms. Chesley!

September 30th, 2010 - 4:00 to 5:00 pm

Make your very own Screen Print Tee Shirts! Make sure to bring a plain white t-shirt or other article of clothing that you want to place a design on. All sorts of funky designs and emblems will be available! Easy instructions will be given to make your shirts, and your designs will dry quickly! This is a very fun and exciting craft!

Sing some apple picking songs and crunch and munch your way through One Red Apple by Harriet Ziefert. Afterwards, use an apple to do an apple painting.

What would we do without our hands and our feet? Today we get to be silly thinking of all the things you can do with hands and feet – clap, pick things up, count, TICKLE, walk, run, jump - oh my, the list goes on and on. There are all different sizes and kinds of hands and feet – big, little, sticky, smelly. Hear about some of them in What Neat Feet by Hannah Machatka. Use your own foot to make a puppet to take home.

September 2 – My Body/ I like Me

So many parts make up our wonderful bodies and they all work together so we can do all sorts of things. We’ll make our bodies dance and wiggle and move in all sorts of fun ways as we sing and play today. What are some favorite things you like to do? We’ll read the Mercer Mayer book This is My Body and then make a dancing puppet that looks just like you.

September 9 – Hands and Ears

“Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro?” Silly songs and fun rhymes about our ears and hands make up this week’s storytime. Think of all the things you can do with your hands- clap, pick things up, TICKLE, and so much more. We’ll have lots of fun trying to guess Whose Ears Are These in the book by Peg Hall. Then we’ll make a cool wreath out of your own hands.

September 7 - Let’s Go to the Caribbean

Travel to the islands for the last days of summer. Why is the water so blue here? Feel the cool breeze blowing in from the ocean. What beautiful plants grow here and what beautiful wildlife inhabits the island. You’ve come to the perfect place for your favorite summer photo. Make a tropical picture frame to keep it in.

September 14 – Puerto Rico

Come to the land of shrieking parrots, thundering waves and sugarcane. Explore the “Island of Enchantment”. Listen to steel drums then make some brightly decorated maracas and create your own island festival.

September 21 – Dominican Republic

Explore the tropical paradise of the Dominican Republic. Once you find out the average temperature there, you’ll understand why it’s called a tropical paradise. Can you guess what the favorite sport is? What kind of food do you think they eat there? You’ll get to try one of them – a Caribbean banana- and find out what a plantain is.

September 28 – Haiti

Haiti has been in the news a lot recently. This Caribbean country actually shares an island with another we’ve already studied. Do you know which one? How is it different from the other islands of the Caribbean? Is it rich or poor? Do you know what a Tap-Tap is? Have you ever eaten Boulette? Bring what you know about Haiti and help us learn more about how different the Caribbean Islands are.

We will explore the urban legend of the Loch Ness Monster. We will gather facts, listen to short stories, watch a video about this strange creature and create our own “Nessie” from clay.

September 8 – Mermaids

Fact or fiction? Come and discover mermaid history, tales and games. Create your own mermaid to take home while enjoying mermaid snacks!

September 15 – Big Foot

Urban legend or myth? You will have lots of fun deciding what’s true or not about this big fellow. Have you heard the story of Bigfoot Cinderrrrella? Make a sasquatch mask and remove all doubts for your friends that Big Foot does exist.

September 22 – Dragons, Dragons, Dragons

Did dragons actually exist? If so, where did they live and play? Come step back in time to Dragon Days. Hot, hot, hot!

September 29 – The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Enjoy a classic and ride with the “headless horseman” through Sleepy Hollow. Finish with a campfire treat (hmm- now how do you eat that with no head?)

Book Discussion Group

Looking for great fourth and fifth grade readers!!

Beginning in September, the Morganton Public Library will begin a book discussion for children in fourth and fifth grades. Selections were made on an age appropriate level. Books that will be discussed were chosen based on their award winning status, quality or overall content.

The book discussions can be signed up for on a monthly basis. They will take place on the fourth Wednesday of every month (excluding December) at 3:30pm and will last 45 minutes to an hour. Book discussions will include a snack, of course, after we use so much brain power discussing! Discussions will be led by a library staff member that will guide the discussions and ensure that everyone is able to participate as they choose and topics are relevant.

Parents, please preview our book selections to decide if you wish for your child to participate. I will have book reviews on hand prior to the discussions and available upon signup to aid you in your decision making. We will not be providing each child with a book, so please feel free to reserve and checkout the copies available to you through the Morganton Public Library and our branches in Valdese and Hildebran.

While her brothers, father and uncle are out fighting the war, Valor is left at home with her mother, a cousin and some of her family’s servants. During a Yankee raid, the soldiers take the family’s livestock and supplies and leave their home in shambles. Valor goes on a journey disguised as a boy to retrieve her family’s possessions including their animals and plots revenge against the soldiers. This is a story of bravery and determination of the women and children on the homefront during the Civil War in the Appalachian Mountains.

The Graveyard Book
by Neil Gaiman


Graveyard Book is the story of a boy that is orphaned when he is a baby and his family is murdered. “Bod,” short for Nobody Owens, is taken in and raised by a couple that are buried in a cemetery. He learns several tricks such as “fading” to survive in the graveyard and even learns to attend school as a “regular” student. The whole cemetery quickly befriends Bod and this is the story of his adventures as he connects with those living and dead in the search for his identity.

The Crimson Cap
by Ellen Howard


The year is 1687, and it is the age of exploration. America is unsettled and the Native Americans are engaged in fierce battles over the land as settlers come in and begin to establish settlements throughout their territories. The Crimson Cap is the story of ten year old Pierre Talon who sets out on an expedition with the French explorer La Salle to find the Mississippi River. Pierre becomes part of this expedition due to his ability to learn Native American languages quickly. His father abandoned the family, and the settlement where his mother and siblings live is decimated with hunger and illness. Pierre sets out to find help and hope for his family and the settlers. When La Salle, along with his aides, is murdered, Pierre becomes ill and is taken in by an Indian tribe. This is the story of his journey and choosing between the culture he knows that has betrayed him or the tribe that has become his family.

MPL Kids Advisory Board

The Youth Services Department at the Morganton Public Library is currently looking for parents and kids (grades 3-5) that are willing to serve on an advisory board. These individuals will assist the Youth Services Staff in the planning of programs through recommendations.

We will discuss programming for birth through 5th grade and also opportunities for parent and teacher workshops. This board will also serve to help us with large projects that may require a group effort. We will meet four times a year.

The kids must be in 3rd through 5th grade. If you have your child(ren) involved here at the library, now is your chance to help us out and speak up! Tell us what you would like to see offered and how you feel we could better serve our community!

Families of children birth through age three years are invited to participate in a Literacy Lunch Group.
Bring a healthy bag lunch for you and your child(ren), and enjoy a wealth of child and family literacy activities that help strengthen existing abilities and build new skills while having fun!

When: August 30th, September 20th, October 25th, November 22nd
Time: Noon until 2:00pm
Where: Burke County Public Library Meeting Room
